12 things to remember before you pack your bags
Heading away these summer holidays? Make sure you are safe and prepared with this checklist of handy hints from Yale to secure your home and property when going away.
- Lock all doors and windows, including garage, house and garden shed
- Cancel postal and newspaper deliveries
- Lock away all tools and ladders
- Arrange for lawns and shrubs to be trimmed while you are away
- Mark all your possessions with your own security mark
- Display “Beware” signs if you have a dog or alarm - advertise it!
- Leave a radio on quietly
- Do not close your curtains
- Leave appropriate internal light(s) on, connected to a timer so lights are switched on at night only
- Advise your neighbours of your plans. Arrange for mail to be collected if possible or held by the postal service
- Advise your Neighbourhood Support or Neighbourly Group
- Divert or unplug your phone
